What does the lactic acid serum actually do?
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that loosens the layer of dead cells sitting on your skin’s surface, so what’s underneath looks brighter and feels smoother. It also works as a humectant, meaning it draws water into the skin while it exfoliates — which is why it doesn’t leave you tight and stripped the way harsher acids can. Over time it evens out tone, softens rough texture and fades shallow marks. We pair ours with panthenol, aloe vera and chamomile to keep the whole thing comfortable.
Take the 5% if this is your first chemical exfoliant, if your skin is dry or reactive, or if you plan to use it on thinner skin like underarms. Take the 10% if you’ve used acids comfortably before and you’re tackling stubborn texture, rough body skin or dullness that hasn’t shifted. 10% is our standard bottle. If you’re unsure, start at 5% and use it once a week — with AHAs you can always move up, but repairing an over-exfoliated barrier costs you weeks. Lactic acid in most cases, and especially on brown skin. Both are AHAs, but lactic acid has a noticeably larger molecule, so it works closer to the surface and exfoliates more gently. Glycolic penetrates deeper and works faster, at the cost of a much higher chance of stinging, redness and flaking — and irritation on deeper skin tones can leave dark marks behind. Lactic acid also hydrates while it exfoliates, which glycolic doesn’t. Glycolic is the better pick only if your skin is genuinely resilient and already used to acids.
It comes down to where your problem sits. Lactic acid is water-soluble and works on the skin’s surface, so it’s the right choice for dullness, dryness, rough patches, uneven tone and fine lines. Salicylic Acid Serum is oil-soluble and gets down inside the pore, which makes it the one for blackheads, whiteheads and congestion. Dull and dry with tired-looking skin — lactic acid. Two to three nights a week, in the evening. Cleanse, apply 3 to 4 drops to dry skin, then moisturiser on top. Night is better because all AHAs raise your skin’s sensitivity to UV — and that sensitivity lasts for up to two weeks after you stop using the product, not just the next morning. So sunscreen every day is part of the routine, not an optional extra. In Pakistan’s sun especially, exfoliating without SPF trades smoother texture for new tanning.
